So, are you ready to smash?
History of Tennis Game
Tennis has quite an interesting history, starting back in the 12th century in France. Monks used to play a game called “jeu de paume,” where they hit a ball against walls using just their hands. Over time, racquets were introduced, and by the 16th century, the game became popular among the European nobility, especially in France and England.
The game we know today as tennis really took shape in 1873 when a British army officer, Major Walter Clopton Wingfield, created the modern version. He called it “Sphairistike,” but thankfully, people started calling it lawn tennis because it was mostly played on grass. The first major tennis tournament, Wimbledon, was held in 1877, and it’s still the most prestigious tennis event in the world.
As tennis grew in popularity, it spread to other countries, especially in Europe and the U.S. In 1900, the Davis Cup, a major international team tournament, was established. Tennis also became part of the Olympic Games in 1896, which helped it reach even more people globally.
In 1968, the “Open Era” began, allowing both amateur and professional players to compete together. This is when tennis really became a professional sport, with major tournaments like Wimbledon, the US Open, the French Open, and the Australian Open (also known as the Grand Slams) becoming the pinnacle of the sport. Today, tennis is enjoyed by millions around the world, from casual players to elite professionals.
